A regular contributor to ΦBK for the past 20 years, Chris Ives became a member at Williams College before completing his Ph.D. in religion at Claremont Graduate School. He has served as Chair of the Department of Religious Studies and also Director of the Asian Studies Program at Stonehill College, where he teaches in the area of Asian religions. In 2009 he published Imperial-Way Zen, a book on Buddhist social ethics in light of Zen nationalism, especially as treated by Buddhist ethicist Ichikawa Hakugen (1902-1986). Currently he is engaged in research and writing on Zen approaches to nature and Buddhist environmental ethics. His other book publications include Zen on the Trail: Hiking as Pilgrimage (2018) and Zen Awakening and Society (1992).
