For the sixth year, Phi Beta Kappa has partnered with local associations in cities across the country for Key Connections, an event series that offers opportunities for recent Phi Beta Kappa inductees to network with fellow members virtually and in their local communities.
On September 14, the Society hosted a national, virtual panel discussion focused on the fundamentals of networking. The panel featured members with a variety of skills and diverse expertise, including NBC Universal Manager of Talent Development Marc Prenger (ΦBK, University of Cincinnati), Villanova University Director of Professional Development Kate Szumanski (ΦBK, Villanova University), and Athene Corporate Development Associate Jackie Xuan (ΦBK, Wellesley College). Jael Gallagher, vice president of corporate partnerships with the Los Angeles Sparks and senior vice president of ΦBK alumni in Southern California (ΦBK, Boston College) moderated the event. Panelists shared their experiences using networking as a professional development tool as well as their essential tips for making meaningful professional connections.
Following the panel, attendees entered breakout rooms where they reflected on the discussion and connected with their peers. This event came together with the help of Phi Beta Kappa’s spring and summer interns as well as the D.C. association’s young professional committee, which hosted a similar event this past February. This national event served as the kickoff for more than 20 regional events hosted by Phi Beta Kappa associations to help introduce their groups to recent members and provide space—whether virtual or in person—for conversation and networking. The Omaha, Pittsburgh, and Richmond associations planned outings to museums; the Indiana and D.C. associations offered career panels; the Twin Cities association gathered at a local planetarium; and the Southern California, Delaware Valley, and Detroit associations hosted virtual networking opportunities.
Key Connections events for recent inductees will continue throughout September and October. We encourage all Phi Beta Kappa members to explore and take advantage of the in-person and virtual events scheduled throughout the year.
